What is Freemasonry to me

By Bro. Duncan Victor

suppose I should first explain the reasons why I decided to join this esteemed society.  It all started with one book, The Hiram Key (Christopher Knight & Robert Lomas).  This book opened a new world for me to discover.  After reading it I tried to find out what freemasonry was all about by reading more books on the subject and searching on the internet.  Alas both sources of information proved to be ambiguous concerning what it meant to be a freemason.  So I did the obvious thing and knocked on the door so to speak and asked a member if I could join such an esteemed society (remembering ...2 B 1 ask 1).

One thing I noticed is that once you're a member you should ideally forget everything you'd previously read on the subject and start with a clean slate, as most of what you'll find on print and the internet are over-zealous and romantic articles on how Freemasons are the guardians of Arthuresque relics and the custodians of numerous archaic secrets of epic proportions.  Unfortunately, you will also find the less positive (but very amusing) diatribes against freemasonry on how it, as a well oiled machine, is behind and responsible for all of the worlds violent social revolutions, coup d'états and so on and so forth ad nauseam.

You will undoubtedly notice that all you will find are 2 extreme points of view towards the Craft.  So all we can advise a potential candidate is to read all points of view and let the Candidate make a choice.  If freemasonry calls from his heart, he (the Candidate) will take the first step towards the spiritual journey that is our Craft.

And that, my brethren, is possibly the biggest truth of all, Freemasonry calls to you from your own hearts as it is the manifestation of our own morals and ethics.

Ultimately this is what I, in my little experience as a Freemason, have come to understand.  We are here to learn from the experience of our veteran brethren and to better ourselves by the moral compass that is our Fraternity.
